The Acting Class with Q&A with directors and cast

October 2017

This film talks to struggling actors about the difficulties they face when they don’t have the resources to get in and get on in the industry. We follow actor Tom Stocks who had to twice turn down a place at the East 15 drama school because he could not afford the fees. Angered by this Tom set up Actor Awareness and the film documents his struggle to create opportunities for those outside the elite networks and raise awareness about class exclusion in the acting industry.

Actors Chris Eccleston, Julie Hesmondhalgh, Maxine Peake, Samuel West and others talk about why this situation should concern everyone and how things have got harder since they entered the industry. This is not a film about acting; it’s about the lack of working class representation on our stages and our screens.Who gets to be on our stages and screens matters to all of us. Whose stories get told, what images we have of ourselves, who we think ‘we’ are, helps shape our identities. And that is political.

Kungadred in partnership with Chronic Love Foundation and Peckham and Nunhead Free Film Festival

WELCOME TO BUSSEYWOOD IS BACK! Part of the award winning, Peckham and Nunhead Free Film Festival, the famous Bussey Building is once again host to London's largest one day Free African films festival.

Great films back to back, exploring the exciting multi-layered nature of the African film narrative.

From classic African cinema to new and emerging artists from Africa and the wider African community.

Curated and organised by Orvil Kunga (aka Kungadred) , 'Welcome to Busseywood' hopes to become a place where the London community can come and experience stories which are often over-looked in mainstream cinema.

This is a totally FREE!! to attend event...NO TICKETS NO BOOKINGS required...just turn up on the day and enjoy all the goodies from African cinema on offer including:

Half of Yellow Sun (Dir. Biyi Bandele, 2013, Nigeria, cert PG. 111 mins)
starring award winning actors Chiwetel Ejifor and Thandie Newton, Half of a Yellow Sun is the biggest film to come out of Africa from an African director, having gained international cinematic release. Biyi Bandele's debut feature based on the Purple prize winning book of the same name by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, is set to become an African cinematic classic!
Sisters Olanna (Thandie Newton)and Kainene (Anika Noni Rose) return home to 1960s Nigeria, where they soon diverge on different paths. As civil war breaks out, political events loom larger than their differences as they join the fight to establish an independent republic.

Imani - (Dir Caroline Kamya 2010, Uganda, cert PG. 82mins)
vibrantly captures three vignettes of life in modern day Uganda: A child soldier returning to the parents who could not protect him, a woman fighting to get her wrongly accused sister out of jail, and a youth dance troop leader struggling to simply get through a hometown performance. These seemingly disparate stories slowly fuse into a profound singular narrative as the characters reveal themselves to be uniformly off balance in their own lives, and the world around them.

Oya's job is to keep the doorway between the world of man and the world of the Orishas firmly closed, for, if it is opened, the Orishas will wreak havoc upon the Earth as retribution for man's abandonment of them. To keep the door shut she must find the 'key' (a young girl with the potential to open the doorway) and she is tasked in keeping the young girl safe.
